The Almshouses café restaurant Durham

The Almshouses - view of Durham Cathedral

In the heart of a world heritage site, beside Durham Cathedral, the Almshouses Café-Restaurant enjoys a situation as spectacular as any restaurant in England.

Situated on Palace Green between Durham Cathedral and the Castle, the Almshouses were founded in 1666 by Bishop Cosin in the building formerly occupied by Bishop Langley’s Grammar School, built almost two centuries earlier. The building was given to the University after its founding in 1832, and it has been used as a café since the 1960’s. The current proprietors, Eric and Gillie Marrion, have provided a high standard of food and service since 1983, and built a solid reputation based on the provision of fresh, uncomplicated modern cuisine thoughtfully prepared from fresh ingredients.

The restaurant is self-service, informal and has a daily changing menu.

Paintings by Eric Marrion are hung in the dining room and are for sale. See his paintings by downloading the flash player and going to the gallery page
